you use a mnemonic if there is something specific that gives you trouble. it's meaningless if you do it for everything and just wastes time while filling your brain with extra junk instead of just remembering things by association.
I learned 40 kanji a day for ~3 months and since then I went down to 3 kanji a day because it's not that important anymore. during that time my retention rate was constantly around 95% without mnemonics. it's still like that now
