I had some free time so I decided to take a look at the image problems. As it turns out, they were caused by a bug in the decompressor routine in the engine --- our compressor was producing correct output that our own decompressor could handle, but not the one in the engine. SOFTPAL probably gimped their own compressor to work around the bug, at the expense of ~7-10% worse compression. Our solution? Rewrite the decompressor (making it approximately 60% of the size of the original) and provide it as a patch, so both the original images and the edited images will work.
