I haven't read Sumaga, but at the very least, it has likable characters, so the meta aspect is not the only thing it has going about it.

GnC has great atmosphere and sound (both the OST and Sugita as the protag are amazing), but its plot is a bit silly. Still, I'd say it's the best of Shimokura's works, even if it's not his achievement.

I'm feeling like Sumaga's success affected his writing way too much, so he's trying to use its various elements in his every work now. Out of his works, I like Gekkou no Carnevale the most, and that's mostly because of the setting and the atmosphere, not the writing.
