Just 'cause she has magic doesn't mean all the magic does the same stuff.
Patchouli is an elementalist. Can she do Necromancy?

I don't see why she would be immune to her own radiation, and from the few screenshots I've seen she can direct the blast as suns or something; definitely not something you could do with a raw nuclear explosion

It's a sustained nuclear reaction, actually.
It's a continuous bomb going off. That's what stars are. Endlessly looping bombs. They look round because they're in space and have no air to displace as a mushroom cloud and THEY DON'T STOP IN A FLASH LIKE NUKES.
Well, some do, but Supernovae are big fucking flashes.
