It sure helps with navigating through old threads, but I like to think that non-general threads below the old one benefit more from getting a few more minutes/hours of visibility. It's possible that could make the difference between a one-off thread getting a good reply or not. I reckon it's usually not the case though, so I'm not prepared to get into a whole debate about board/general etiquette.
