>By all accounts the game seems to be doing about average, but even that supposedly isn't good enough.

Not that it is doing poorly, but I would argue the title isn't doing quite as well as it initially appeared to be doing. It briefly hit 52 concurrent users, however that didn't hold quite as well as one would have expected for a non-Kickstarter release. Additionally, a non-trivial portion of their sales seem to be Chinese based considering half the reviews thus far are in Chinese, and its initial concurrent users peak was within their prime time, where the sale price is roughly $13 instead of $32.

Its Denpa sales haven't been especially impressive either, as the best selling sort is in fact still working and still appears to be based on the long term sales, but it has only passed three titles thus far, putting it as the 20th of 23 best selling titles omitting the two demos on the site.

All that said, I am guessing that there is an element of higher costs involved that made it difficult to break even. It was one of Sekai's earlier titles, licensed back when Steam was at its strongest so the licensing terms probably weren't the strongest. Additionally, it wouldn't be a surprise if they incurred relatively high localization costs between its length, hiring multiple translators to finish the localization quickly, and it went into development just as Sekai was beginning to trim costs.
