It seems that you can get pretty decent gains if you level them up slowly, fusing them with NPCs that are slightly higher level each time. If the NPC has a stat higher than the pet, then the pet gets a gain in that stat. It seemed much more effective, but I rarely see anyone talking about doing it, so it feels like I was doing something wrong. The actual skills still need to be ground out, but you can get skill potentials up pretty high at the dojo if you can save up enough gold. I was always spending so much money on other stuff that it was tough to dump gold into several pets to get some decent potential gains.
