To elaborate a bit on making a portrait, all you have to do is look for art you like, crop it out, scale it down/edit it to your liking, and save as .bmp. Here is an example of the process for a portrait I made from houtengeki's art for my Elea wizard pet.

I drew the sprite myself, but you can just as well edit somebody else's to your liking or use them as is, which takes far less work. It's easiest to have a sprite ready first and then look on image sites like boorus for art to make a matching portrait from, because there is simply more general art around than there are sprites for Elona. A fun thing I like to do with portraits is draw over them, because when you've scaled it down to Elona portrait size, the image is so small it's really easy to edit. I take mouths and eyes from other images too and swap them out like I'm playing with Mr Potato Head, takes less time than drawing.
