Just FYI, as someone who fucking loves these games and has played all of them, I wouldn't recommend Josou Sennen Oukoku as a starting point. If you want to know why, it has a cameo of a character from a previous game near the end. It's not a major thing but it's a nice little moment.
The last game in the series goes full srw / marvel's avengers and brings everyone back.
