When UM came out, we had a thread where an anon went over the mythology behind the new characters. Some depictions of the Buddha show him in this pose, but I don't think he said what it means. I still think its meant to evoke a dollar sign.

It is said that Chimata's gesture comes from the Buddha
the phrase 天上天下 can be found in the story of Sarutahiko, Chimata's alleged origin, as well as one of the Buddha's sayings

Sarutahiko's intro: The god who lighted up the heaven and the earth from Yachimata
>天の八衢にいて《天上天下》を照らしていた神。
Buddha's saying: I alone am the honored one in the heavens and on earth.
>《天上天下》唯我独尊

this again implies that Chimata is related to Sarutahiko, plus a little bit Buddism also
