typing all that out for anon made me realize how much i love kanji now compared to when i first started haha. when i started i was intrigued by them but also scared as fuck of them
now they feel like collecting pieces of the huge puzzle that is nihongo
learning new words and the kanji within them feels like adding runes to my collection
or upgrading the ones i already have (when i learn new words or readings for them)

i'm starting to learn that if you really do get a LOT of input (4 hours or more a day consistently), are diligent about looking up EVERYTHING you have doubts about, preferably use a monolingual dictionary for most things, AND make sure to "feel" the meanings of new things when you look them up rather than just glance at their meanings and move on,
you can make gains without anki
