Think about the purpose of furniture in an upper class mansion like the Ushiromiya's. They're decorations; they exist to uphold the image of the family's social status by looking beautiful and embodying bourgeoisie values.
The focus on their superficiality is honestly a pretty nuanced critique of the performativity of gender. Shannon/Kanon repress their 'true' inner self (Yasu) in favour of impersonating 'outer' heteronormative ideals of femininity/masculinity in order to integrate into society. (I'd recommend reading Butler's "Imitation and Gender Insubordination" to get a more complete understanding of what I'm saying)
