What's with the way numbers are written in the Overlord LNs?

e.g. 39, rather than being written as 三十九, is written as 三九 (which I presume is still intended to be read the same way as 三十九)

I don't recall ever seeing numbers written like this before in other things I've read. Is this common in LNs? Or is it a peculiarity of the author?
