I then use CSS to change the look of this table, and to reposition it.
The top part of this CSS code does this. The bottom chunk, starting with ".tag[href*="#1_cat/"] {" goes on, and just changes the colors of the various tag families.

I use subtags to keep things well organized, and then use the recently released "Base Tag Renderer" plugin to hide everything except the last part of the tag.
