Mito was basically "Our girl" for japan, she was the most self-aware vtuber, browsed imageboards and was not afraid to tell her wacky child stories to the world (like eating clovers, streaming on top of her washing machine and other awkward stuff) so japan quickly put her on a pedestal as the hero japan needed at the time.

once Mito confirmed there was such an audience it opened the gates for the likes of FBK, Miko, DWU and recently, otogibara era, also this is the reason Coco is winning now, because asacoco is the embodiment of that sort of thing.

also the "streaming" format defeated the "edited video" format, because its more unfiltered and authentic, which is what people seek, they want the full story now.
