Well, the main difference are, choosing America as an example say:
In Japan, society does not concern itself with what you are doing behind closed doors, nor that your "Honne" may run contrary to the "Tatemae" expected of you. Whereas in America, their equivalent of "Tatemae" is the result of hundreds of years of Christian brainwashing, which is why many expect it to be kept up permanently, even in private. Americans will poke their nose into other peoples' private businesses, and are always thrilled by the prospect of outing someone as secretly being a pervert, etc, and huge scandals develop over what people might be allowed to do behind closed doors, as exemplified by the whole "rapelay on Amazon" scandal, which fiercely offended many who felt that what people do behind closed doors should be goverened by America's "Tatemae".

Also, in other countries such as America, people are far more hypocritical and less honest about such issues. They will pretend that the facade they put on to society is their true self, and violently repel any attempts to show how fake this is. Their desire to see the outer-facade as something natural is deep-seated, and leads many to think that concepts such as "Etiquette" are natural things which have nothing to do with the culture in which one is raised, and that wearing a suit to a meeting is a completely natural thing to do, and that should there be life at the Pleiades, they would wear near identical suits going to near identical meetings.

All in all, it's just that the Japanese are the only people who widely admit to such hypocrisy, rather than trying to pretend it doesn't exist by keeping up their facade even when they're alone, or believing in an invisible sky magician always watching them which means they need to keep it up forever, despite the invisible sky magician knowing everything including what their "Honne" is anyway.
