Maybe you should read up on the mana section a bit of World Guide 3. When it comes to spells they are essentially the same as a power source, as mana is simply the "life" of a living thing. But the drastically different orders of living things mean different types of mana that have some differences ordained by the gods. Monsters for instance are noted for mana that is meant for "high performance, low efficiency."

Mana type and amount are seem to be proportionate to how quickly a being can self-regenerate mana.

1. Plants, animals = Low mana amount, rapid regeneration.
2. Humans = Average mana amount, average regeneration.
3. Monsters = High mana, slow regeneration.
4. Gods = Highest mana, slowest regeneration

Of course the changes Lilith brought to mamono mana means some of the above rules have changed. Monsters can regenerate their mana rapidly for instance by feeding on human essence.

Stuff like that probably happened, but on a smaller scale than you might think. Monsters apparently only attacked humans in large, coordinated numbers after a mamono lord is selected to organize them. Lilith came to power toward the end of the "humans are mostly left alone and increase in population" stage of the "cycle of the world" that existed back then.

Cycle pictured here not related, beyond showing what a previous era werewolf looked like.
