>he silent sinner one was kind of icky for me
Well yeah, if you're jumping around Bougetsushou skipping the introductions, exposition and ending, it's not going to be very coherent

>I'm just amazed by how fans have managed to flesh out all these characters that officially only say a few lines in their boss fights.
Except that's not remotely true?

This is kind of like reading the bio on a Star Trek action figure, then reading a fanfic and being amazed by how creative action figure fans are for coming up with transporters and warp drive.

Short answer, play EoSD as stated earlier in the thread.
Long answer, pic related.
Playing the PC-98 titles is optional since they are 99% irrelevant to the rest of the franchise.

It's a bit old, but this lists everything in chronological order. There's also a timeline on the wiki that's more detailed.

Good beginner games: 4,5,6,7,10,13
To avoid as a new player: 1,2,3,9,9.5,12.5,12.8,14.3
Fighting games: 7.5,10.5,12.3,13.5,14.5

In my opinion 4 is the best beginner game but requires a proper emulator setup (too much work and confusion for some new players). After 4, I'd say 7,10,6 are among the best starter games. 8 is a bad beginner game because it will not teach you fundamentals and behaves different mechanically than other games. Do not use slowmode or change starting resources, unless you want to hit a brick wall later. Play with the default settings so you can learn how to manage your resources. You will not be able to change your settings in later games.

If you like the games after you play your first one, I suggest playing them in chronological order.

This might help if you want to get into everything about Touhou. It doesn't mention the first five games, which are for the PC98 computer systems and require emulation. I personally don't like the first three games, but I find 4 and 5 to be beginner friendly and are some of my personal favorites. Other games generally considered good starting points are 6, 7, and 10.
