It's a synonym. basically, it can be read either way. Wait until you get to combining kanji and hiragana and realize that most kanjis can be read multiple ways. I actually find it easier to remember those kanji, since I am thinking "this is the one with two readings while on its own/with this same pairing" and that helps it stick out.

This brings up a good point. Is it better to just go ahead and read and try to understand sentences with what you know or is it better to look up every thing you don't know? With the former you can read a hell of a lot more, but I don't know whether or not you'd really be gaining anything by doing so. What are djt's thoughts?
