I found Carta pretty great myself, the in my opinion the atmosphere was better (more grim after ww2-y and engaging), it has a smaller but more likable cast, and Nana (Shugo's sister) is awesome. The only issue with her I thought, (but this could be more of the issue how it's missing the notepad/interactivity stuff one gets in KnS/Caucasus) that Nana is the one helping out Shugo and at times it seems she played the game already or something as she knows so much.
Also I liked Shugo's POV more than Reiji's. Art is rather different (in my opinion worse) than the stuff Sugina Miki did after that, but I'd put the BGM on about the same level.
The main route is great but it's not as overarching as KnS and not as complex. It might be more hard on the stomach too (like you are forced to eat some meat a heroine who died X time ago while as you are being delirious have delusions about how said heroine is trying to encourage to "eat me Shugo, at least this way I can be with you for forever!", but it's not like KnS was a walk in the park either with Rokushiki detailing his past when he fed her own fetus to the woman she operated for abortion.), but I guess that's highly subjective.
Moreover Carta was the first game the Takoyaki Oyaji appears, and he's damn awesome!
I prefer KnS over it, but it's great too.
