Business had been good ever since I moved my tool repair and clothing mending stall closer to Youkai Mountain a few seasons ago, except for one detail: the white wolf tengu were growing weary of me.
Of course, I didn’t think it was too abnormal in the beginning, Tengu are mistrustful of villagers after all, but after a few weeks they started warming up to my services. The Tengu have high standards for their garbs and appearance, so soon I was flooded with jobs mending clothing, armor, sharpening swords, repainting their caps and the like.
It started with the look in their eyes. I’d see a sideways glance here, an unblinking stare there, sometimes they’d even hide in the bushes where they thought I couldn’t see them just watching.
After a while they began loitering a little too close to me when I would be repairing their clothes, saying it was to make sure my work was high quality, but nobody had any complaints or critique. It’s become quite a hassle since they’re surprising buxom (the uniform conceals a lot) and often my elbow will bump into their soft parts while they’re leaned over my shoulder.
I tried relocating to the forest of magic just to see if things would cool off, but they still made the trip to solicit my services, which spooked me a tad, but some of them even brought me gifts like a nice grindstone and the red dye they use, so I came back to my old spot fearing that I might look ungrateful.
But when I came back, things became more severe. A few of them escort me to and from the village for ‘protection’, their company leaders randomly inspect my cart, and they often question my whereabouts.
I had asked an expert on Tengu behaviors, and he told me they could be planning to abduct me or worse. I know that Tengu prefer young boys or those sociable men with handsome faces and I’m an adult with a plain face and a stern personality, so they must be plotting something more severe. I honestly think they may be planning to eat me!
It would explain why their ears twitch and tails wag when they approach me, I hear it’s a sign of excitement among wolves who’re on the lookout for their next meal. Perhaps their flush faces are their canine bodies warming up to attack me.
Closing the stall might just anger them further, so I attempted to appeal at the Moriya Shrine for divine protection and the great Kanko even appeared before me! However, she just put her hand on my shoulder, gave me a ‘thumbs up’ sign and told me to do my best.
