I think the big issue with Reiwa is that the Polaris set up/reveal of the previous curse failed to have as much impact as the one in Onikakushi due to various reasons (only one year, coincidental death compared to dismemberment while Rena is holding a weapon nearby, overall reused set up but with less intensity). That probably was supposed to be the "hook" before the current batch of slice of life stuff and it kind of fell flat.

Well, that and the club dynamics are much more boring since they don't have all those competitive games, it's just them talking (which makes sense since the "club" even existing seems to be a Natsumi Kei thing, since there's no club in Hoshiwatashi).
