Didn't Ryukishi confirm that all his characters are actors playing different roles? Battler/Butler, Rika/Bern, Satoshi/Sakutaro/Sakunoshin, Natsuhi/Julie, Satoko/Lambda/Meryl, Akihito/Akihito, Tomita-kun/Nonomiya Takeshi... There are some other Rika lookalikes, but they are obviously different actors who just look similar.

That would make the All-Cast-Review sessions in Higurashi the highest level of meta, followed by the sea of fragments, the Umineko metaworld (which seems to be a relatively small cluster of Rokkenjima-related worlds) and finally the individual parallel worlds.

This is pretty mind-blowing. And yes, the canon version of the story, which is the VN, clearly shows that Satoko's actress (Satoko) got butt naked in the third arc and played her role passionately despite being so young. She is incredibly talented.

Higanbana had a teacher rape, photograph and blackmail a schoolgirl. It had elementary school kids ganging up on weak ones and driving them so suicide. It had some of the most fucked up stuff Ryuukishi has ever written.

And yet, it didn't take advantage of the fact that it takes place in the 80s, when lolis were still allowed to appear naked in both mainstream and arthouse films, to explore the concept of Midori (the actress girl from the third chapter) getting bullied to death after doing an innocent nude scene for a movie.

Wasted opportunity, IMO. Especially when Japan still allowed that stuff well past the mid-90s, before being cucked by western influence. It's an interesting idea to explore. How nude scenes can affect the actors in their personal lives, especially when they are young, self-conscious and surrounded by asshole classmates with zero empathy and a desire to bully others.

Although Higanbana seems to take place in the 80s/late 90s, so there's no way Midori's classmates would find out about some obscure film she got butt naked in. Let alone have a VHS tape of the film to show the other classmates.

The world was very different before the internet era.
