I went through the same issue when I finished tae kim and went through the first 1k core cards. I would fuck up the same cards every review session unless I wrote them down 50 times and even then... it broke me to a degree. Took a break learned all 214 "radicals" like so many articles told me and that did jack fucking shit. Radicals only gave me 1/4 of the puzzle sometimes not even that(not counting radicals that are also kanji). Lies after lies I finally tried rtk the one thing I've been running from since everyone(reddit,articles,4chan) was telling me you don't need to learn how to write and lo and behold 500 kanji before I finish I can distinguish 20+ similar squigly lines with a glance like blood on a white wall. Now I have so much space in my head to focus on readings without all his stress of forgetting or mixing things up. Studying this language really taught me not to trust the fucking majority. 20 more days to go.
