That's why I had been avoiding it, I figured that time and effort could have been better spent on reading so I could learn kanji, vocab, and grammar all at once. But I don't have as much issue with the other things, it's the kanji that is holding me back right now. I'll give it a shot, thank you.

Thank you, I just see a bunch of people like that and that's my worst nightmare, spending all this time and effort to get nowhere. I was worried I'm doing something wrong somehow, but I will make your suggestion my current goal.
