the six sided star is called kagome and it is a symbol associated with magic and portals. this is just my guess but it may be related to its use in basketweaving. the urge for a child to stick their finger through these holes is overwhelming. its usage is common, for example in the manga inuyasha the main character kagome travels through a portal to another world.
