Charlotte was neat. It just wasn't suited for such an anime like that. Had it been a novel or a VN I am sure it would been great.
The actual anime though felt like it wanted to have its cake and eat it too. Telling a story in a manner not suited for the format, but doing so anyway since it's what he's most familiar with. Or something along those lines.
