I think using unreliable narration to justify the existence of a single person larping as different characters in the same place at the same time makes for a terribly unsatisfying explanation for the mysteries. It sounds more like a legal loophole and less like a well written story. Yes, it might technically be valid if the author really forces the story in that direction, but that doesn't mean it makes for a satisfying read. Any other explanation that do not rely on such a cheap trick, while also being consistent with the characters and themes are better to me.
