I explained this in a previous thread so I'll copy my response from there.

From what I recall during the earlier parts of Mercurius' reign, he had an age of gods where every natural phenomena had an associated deity. Darkness was Methuselah, lightning was represented by a fierce war god and there was even an Earth mother goddess, fire, water, air etc all had Gods as well, but over time their mystery decreased and they eventually perished, except for Methuselah, since he was the closest in nature to Snek.

I can't recall the how, but the idea is that his law introduced an absurd amount of mystery into the world. The Deities themselves came from the primordial beliefs that people held to those natural phenomena, i.e Darkness represents war, evil, sickness etc., lighting is personified by a fierce war god, the Earth Goddess is kind and amicable. Mystery was at the level where castles were floating in the skies, phantasmal beasts roamed the earth, and magicians would sink entire continents in their battles.

Like I previously mentioned, Methuselah is darkness itself, and has control over all the mysteries of the night. One night's worth of mystery is equivalent to half the planet's density, and Methuselah is made up of every night since the very first night. The crazy part is that every loop by Snek increases his density, since they just continue to pile on. In Ikabey Snek just says he stopped counting after the decillionth loop, and that was a long time ago.
As for what he can do specificly this is what I can remember
He can do shit like make stakes and jaws out of darkness by infusing them with the mysteries of the night, iirc Einherjar Whilem was able to smash through his jaws which were composed of a hundred nights, he fucked up his arm but obviously that instantly healed up. He can reflect any attack from a shadow. He drives people insane by forcing the universal fear of darkness into the minds of whoever faces them, ordinary people would commit suicide, go mad, endure a curse that would carry on for future generations, turns fetuses into albinos etc and all that shit. He has to be extremely careful with his movement otherwise he'd destroy the world by upsetting the Ying Yang balance or some shit. He can also accelerate time to an absurd in a specific area, something ridiculous like ten thousand years per second. That move was fucking up Reinhard's legion and left him with a wound it was really just a crack on his face

Oh yeah I should mention that Reinhard one shot this guy with his spear, where he's weaker than his Dies Irae counterpart. Also Machina could one shot him too with his Ber'iah but before that Methuselah put him into a prison of darkness or some shit.

Based
