Forgot my image, sorry folks.

MEANWHILE.

Some dude a seat in front of me and across the aisle is watching a movie, and every now and then I glance up and see what’s playing. Just now I looked up to see what felt like an incredibly graphic attempted rape scene. It was technically, I don’t know, PG-13 or R-rated according to MPAA standards, I guess? There was no nudity - or underwear showing, for that matter - and it happened pretty quickly. A man sits in a parked car with a woman. They look like they’re arguing, or he’s making advances towards her and she’s rejecting him. He suddenly presses her to the seat and tries to rip off her shirt while she screams and cries and eventually escapes.

Then, shortly after that, I saw an ad for Fiat with Charlie Sheen. I couldn’t hear the ad, but the snippet I saw showed several beautiful women in sleek, revealing dresses milling around in a mansion. Charlie Sheen’s smug, disgusting face shows up and he delivers his line. One of the women slinks up to him seductively and he looks at her, then looks at the camera, delivers another line. Cut to black, the Fiat logo comes up.

It just strikes me as so incredibly, incredibly enraging and hurtful and fucked up that it’s not particularly unusual to look up at my neighbor’s TV screen and see a man who physically assaulted multiple women and bragged about it on national television scoring acting work for high-end car ads, nor is it unusual to see a fucking attempted rape scene in one of the movies that make up the airline’s offered entertainment; but the suggestive images of explicitly consensual sex that I was too afraid to flash on my laptop screen for a split second for fear of reprimand are considered more inappropriate. None of this is novel or surprising. It’s just not really something I was expecting to confront during a cross-country flight.
