the way era takes sprites is quite neat in terms of saving space, but a bit of a mare to adjust
there also isn't really a need to provide more expressions than neutral, happy, angy, blushing, asleep - and even then, not every kaoru set has all five (for instance, there are no Sanae blushes)
dairi is a bit better in that regard but causes different problems
