It's only half a joke. But Trifa made it pretty clear that Kei loosing her sanity and giving up once she found out the true nature of the Valhalla she was fighting for after the school battle was all part of his plan, he just didn't expect for her not to give up thanks to Ren existing.
I can't quite remember but this may have been elaborated upon further in the Marie route, but it was definitely a thing in the Kei route.
