This is my experience, more or less. I always dress nice here for just this reason, I never wear sneakers or graphic tees unless I'm going to the nearby Lawson or something. Also helps that I'm usually out and about with my wife and/or kids, so they (unreasonably) assume that I'm not a thief, rapist, or murderer. I get treated like a Japanese person when I'm out with my kids.
