That's tricky to answer. Early game you're just trying to get the biggest and baddest thing you can hit someone over the head with. So the gaia hammer is good but the most damaging two handed weapon outside of inner god weapons is a very heavy living lightsaber. After that is a living claymore. After that I think is living maces/hammers.

I'm having my ally go two hand and planning for end game so I'm making sure she levels her long sword skill so I don't have to worry about her accuracy later. To that end I have her equipped with the "Claymore" artifact but if I didn't have that I'd probably just equip her with an adamantium or ether regular claymore. Eventually I'll craft her a living lightsaber and fill it with magic damage. Then I'll make it very heavy with cursed flying scrolls.
