Ok, so you have the kid trying to become a Superhero.
And he does go around saving people.
How did he survive?
You know, in regards of money, and the costs needed to go around saving people.
If the intermissions and chants are any indication, he did not exactly get rewarded, and I doubt anyone backed him up.
What did Archer do to survive in this materialistic world?

Shirou viciously killed Ilya in the Mind of Steel path.
He has no qualms killing so long as people live, and the Holy Grail is only a curse machine, so Ilya will inadvertently kill by using it. Therefore, killing Ilya saves people.

I'm currently playing UBW right now, and I'm loving it a lot more than Fate. One thing is I always had a soft spot for Rin and Archer's a hell of a lot more interesting than Saber is. Saber, drew a sword out of a stone, became king weedle weedle. Fucking Archer had almost nothing, trained his body, kept getting betrayed left and right but never complained, made a deal with the world and . . . became bitter.

Archer>Saber character wise.

Plus he's snarky.
