When a gopnik invites you to sit down with them, you must put your heels to the ground. It's a test
Why the matters? Because it's easier to spring into a fight when your heels are up. So when you firmly plant your heels into the ground it means you are giving the other party trust and respect. Gopniks are all about street cred, but if you find yourself in a situation where you are squatting on a curb with a group of gopniks, you already fucked up.

I made all that shit up, growing up slavs would put their heels on the ground and asians would put their heels up, it probably has more to do with bone structure than some deeper cultural meaning
