I really don't understand it.
It's trivial to maintain and distribute software (products) in a decentralised manner.
Why don't they just dump the source code on e.g. GitHub a few years later, it's not like they're in the position to make money from it again?
Is it really only vanity?

I honestly understand very little you're talking about, but pseudorandom vs. random was mentioned in the wiki. What does that exactly mean? Unless the game uses the system's entropy "generator", everything is pseudo-random, and even if it does, it's up to debate...
