I don't know all that much about Melty but UC has stupid long combos at its highest level play, like seriously stupid long nearly-infinite combos, I'm pretty sure you're not meant to get hit by a combo of like 20+ hits whenever anybody lands a hit on you in competitive fighting games. So one of the reasons UC failed to achieve Melty's longevity is that, mechanically speaking, the game was broken. I really liked playing it though.
