I've never seen Kaga's layout but it's going to be more or less like this.
If you really want to sink a ship you have to hit her no-no bits. Damage to other areas can be survived depending on the quality of your damage control and the circumstances of the battle, i.e. if you don't have control of the area you might have to scuttle a crippled ship that would otherwise be savable.
Kaga probably had serious damage to her engines along with what's visible, since they were probably right below the worst damage.
