That's maybe overstating it, but honestly both FSN and Tsukihime would be incredibly boring without branching. As linear stories, they are just not that good or interesting. Branching gives them massive added value.

I have a challenge for y'all who do VNs.

Name me a character you felt an emotional connection to, where that emotion wasn't anger.

I'm asking because I just noticed that the list of the characters I fantasize about the most is almost 1:1 the list of characters I hate and want to see humiliated and broken.

It's important to realize what Akiha's behavior means. When she apologizes for her behavior, it's an admission that the fault is in her. She knows the way she acts is wrong, maybe she can't stop herself from being a bitch but she definitely and clearly feels guilty about it. And when she tearfully confesses her undying semi-incestuous love, it's a sign that her world doesn't revolve around herself and her own pride and status.

Rin never admits she's wrong. Rin never shows any sign of thinking she should be nicer, not even to the man she supposedly loves. That tells me that who Rin really loves the most is Rin, and that is just not appealing to me.

I dunno, after reading three routes out of five I still feel like Akiha is on average more friendly than a bitch, but she sure spends lot of time looking at you disapprovingly.
