I just tried installing it in the most recent version of Wine (2.3) via PlayOnLinux to get around my distro's outdated version and it still gives me the same error. Actually, there's a script for PlayOnLinux to install Hanahira which might be what I need, but it doesn't work... or rather, the version of Wine it's made for doesn't seem to work with PlayOnLinux. When POL is trying to set up the virtual drive for Hanahira using the script, it just gets stuck at the bit where Wine wants to install Gecko - if I select "OK" Wine tries to download Gecko but never makes any progress no matter how long I leave it, and if I select cancel than POL gets an error and fails.

What did you do to get it working? I found this post in the archive so it seems like it is indeed possible as you say:
