Do keep in mind that by read I mean read using the occasional help of a dictionary and easier reading materials. I also occasionally run into a wall of text that throws me off into despair.

Still, once you go past the first hurdle and start reading more and more the studying becomes more interesting and fun. The important thing is to take it at your own pace as long as it isn't super slow (one kanji a day or five words a day or something like that).
Yotsuba& is a good manga that is often recommended to beginners so you should give it a shot. You aren't going to understand all of it just yet but reading is the best way to improve.
