Although... well... it was a long time ago. In the days when the old order and the rivalry of the lady Murasaki and the lady Shonagon were fading from memory, yet lifetimes before the clans made the waves soar red at Dan no Ura. In the forgotten years in between, a fox kit was born in a hollow under a fallen tree on the plain they called Nasu.
Her mother was a plain fox, no different from another. As was her father, as were her siblings. She was not the oldest, nor would she turn out to be the youngest. She would live from day to day, today no different from tomorrow - her few memories would be a scent, a noise, the satisfaction of a full stomach. Passing images of the predators' life on the plain. Her first Winter alone would be rough and cold, but on the frozen snow made her swift and certain on her paws, and the rodents frozen in their hollows were helpless against her. In her first Spring and many after she would find a mate, and in the Summer she would find a den to raise her kits before the cold.
Thus a decade went by. And so another, and yet another, yet many more. Until finally, the days were no longer no different from one another. Maybe not even she herself remembers which came first - maybe it was the sudden knowledge she was there, aware, or maybe the realisation everyone she had known had come and gone. But when feelings became thoughts, and thoughts finally became words, there was no realisation - only questions.

"Why me?"

But she would never know why she among so many had been made different.

It could have been any generic samurai vengeance manga, but then the writer stuck in a single ingredient that instantly turned it to a masterstroke of pure genius. Without changing anything else.

All the gods bless little Daigoro. Where would we be without him?

It's not like she consumes your pitiful fleshy mammal mind into a cesspit of madness eternal because she likes you or anything.

No, really. She's completely indifferent towards your existance.

Fox spirits on the other hand... you never know with them foxes.

Here we go again...
Kitsune are always naturally clean, tidy and smell pleasant. It's a millennium-old fact.

I know what you meant, but...

>Ran
>Komachi

... I like where this is going.

I know. Read the previous posts.
That is why I'm setting this one apart from that of legend. Yami to boshi-something.

She'll just turn into a stone and come right back after annoying some passing travellers.

Yukari isn't the only one in the house with vaguely specified powers of hax.

From what I gather, the racoon dog is considered a bit of a pest even in Japan.
No wonder they're usually depicted as awfully happy in the legends - the little guys eat anything they find.

If that is so, then I've learned something new today. From what I've read so far, tengu can only have two origins - either born tengu from eggs, or transformed sinners. But I haven't read much specific to wolf tengu, so may have missed something.
I stand corrected.

She'll just turn into a stone and come right back out. No big deal.
