Doubtful. Pre-2013 /jp/ was a product of the physical capabilities of the internet at the time, 4chan's relative unpopularity, and the nature of internet culture up until 2013/4.
Social media has a lot to do with it, I think. Internet subcultures were a lot more self-contained back then. Now trends, content and controversies popular on social media permeate all other communities on the internet.
