it wouldn't have as much potential it has as there's much less to depict, there would be fewer jobs involved. the concerts wouldn't exist. you'd instead have a DJ up there and that wouldn't be fun. it'd make for a niche market.

all it took was a teenage girl and a love song for it to take off so yes, it would have happened eventually, but Crypton might not have been the company who made it happen. if miku didn't work out they were going to pull out of the technology altogether.

in marketing psychologically the color violet is used for a number of themes (i googled it): mystery, honour, creativity, luxury, leadership, and even sentimentality. most of these things can theoretically apply to music. maybe if miku was purple but also designed to be an amazing musician on top of being an undercover spy who works for the japanese govt or a secret entity.

yowane haku uses purple in her theme but she not very popular, but that is because she is also not a real voicebank, and was intentionally created as a joke who sounds terrible. gackpoid is also purple but his popularity is backed by the fact that his voice provider is an already wildly popular vocalist in an actual IRL band. yuzuki yukari is popular because flat chests are hot.

the reason miku is blue is because her design took heavily from yamaha synthesizers, particularly the yamaha DX-7, DX-100 and the DX-11. this particular colour of pastel cyan is used consistently throughout these devices.
