Long ago a man known as Ofube no O spread a cult around the villages of Japan. He believed that the larva of the Japanese swallowtail butterfly (Papillo xuthus) was a god. Tokoyo no Kami (God of Tokoyo), he called it. Tokoyo ("Land of the Eternal World") was supposedly a paradise where one could achieve immortality and stay happy forever. He took caterpillars from tachibana (citrus) trees and started his own shrines. He told people how to worship the supposed god. He claimed that if cast out your belongings and dance around shrines of the god then you would become rich if poor and younger if old. Seeing all the wastefulness, the official and head of the Hata Clan, Hata no Kawakatsu, arrested Ofube no O and executed him. Kawakatsu put an end to the cult. The Hata Clan worshipped Matarajin and Hata no Kawakatsu himself was considered by some to be an incarnation of Matarajin.
