Now people who have finished EP1 can understand why Higurashi fans hated Higurashi anime.
Imagine that EP1 being compressed to 4 anime episodes, by cutting sentimental scenes and changing complicated feelings into crazy faces.
How will they be crappy pieces lacking many important things?

Mainly there are 2 popular theories in Japanese fanbase.

First, the truth of scenes which aren't Battler's viewpoint may have been overwritten by the illusion of the witch obeying some kind of rule.
For example, overwritten by the minds of those who have reached the golden village at the previous story(in case of ep2, they are George, Jessica and Maria).

Second, all stories except the last arc may be merely a doubtful "evidence" by the text written by someone(in case of ep2, it's Maria's notebook in the wine bottle, found in the last scene of ep1).
