Hot take: vtubers are like local deities in folk religions. They have "followers" and "members" who gather to hear their words. They have regular ceremonies and celebrations. People present offerings to them. And there's a sense of community centered around them.
Obviously people don't believe in the paranormal anymore but things on the internet are so far out of reach that they seem as elusive as the paranormal. And then the rest is the same crowd psychology that religions and politicians use.
