The blanket stops you from seeing the mess, but it does fuck all to stop microscopic spores. Just get a face mask to stop the worst of what you might stir up, and ventilate as well as possible during and after. Also clean the entire apartment afterwards, as well as yourself. Thoroughly.

Or if you're really lazy, then there are people who clean up that kinds of mess for a living.
