Here are two of Japanese ZUN's favorite STGs. In interviews he mentioned that these particular games were some of his favorites. You can emulate them in MAME; just unzip these folders, put them in your roms directory, and play.

Well, Japanese ZUN has always said that plenty of important males exist in Gensokyo. He just doesn't include them as main characters since they aren't "a part of his story".

tl;dr Japanese ZUN is a game otaku. He knows what he likes and what his audience likes: little girls in silly hats and frilly outfits. It works pretty well too. If only other game designers would follow his proven recipe for success.

Good thing Sanae has both Kanako and Suwacko type weapons.
